Unacceptable Visa Classes

Any visa must indicate an authorized stay in the U.S. of at least 12 months (from the date of application at the RMV) for a customer to be eligible for a Massachusetts driver’s license, learner’s permit, or ID card.

The following visa classes do not prove Massachusetts residence, and are therefore not acceptable for processing a license related transaction:

1.  B-1 through B-2 and B1-B2

2.  C1 through C-3

3.  D

4.  NATO

5.  W-B

6.  W-T

In addition, customers who are issued an I-94W (Visa Waiver) are NOT eligible to obtain a license or ID due to their short-term status.

If a customer has a visa classification listed as not acceptable, he/she is not eligible for a Massachusetts permit/license/ID card, but may be eligible for a Liquor ID card.
