Transfer of Ownership

Any time the ownership of a motor vehicle is transferred from one party to another (e.g. a sale), the Certificate of Title must be assigned and given to the new owner at the time of delivery of the vehicle along with any supporting documentation required by law or by Registry of Motor Vehicles administrative policy.

A vehicle that has outstanding liens may not be transferred until the lien is satisfied.

All transfers of ownership may be subject to sales/use tax, with various rules and exceptions. Please see the Massachusetts Sales and Use Tax Requirements section for more information.

This section describes the policies related to transferring ownership of a vehicle for individuals, dealers, and in situations of the death of the owner. In addition, this section describes the policies related to situations in which ownership of a vehicle is transferred involuntarily, such as due to a repossession, bankruptcy, or court order.
