Specialty Vehicles

This section provides the Registry of Motor Vehicles current polices related to obtaining a Title for a specialty vehicle. The Registry of Motor Vehicles considers a specialty vehicle to be a vehicle such as a kit car, replica vehicle, street rod, custom vehicle, composite vehicle, specially-constructed vehicle, or a truck glider kit.

Specialty vehicles must be titled and registered. However, before a Title can be issued for a specialty vehicle, the vehicle must be assigned a Massachusetts Assigned Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) by the State Police unless the vehicle already has a Massachusetts Assigned Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or a State Assigned Vehicle Identification Number from another jurisdiction. Composite Vehicles and Glider Kits may not require a state assigned Vehicle Identification Number. See the Massachusetts Assigned Vehicle Identification Number section for more information.

A customer, by law, must also complete an Application for Replacement of Vehicle Identification Number in order to register and title a specialty vehicle.
