The Registry of Motor Vehicles will also attempt to confirm a customer’s Social Security number with Social Security On-Line Verification approximately three months prior to the customer’s permit/license/ID card expiration date. This Social Security number online verification will only be done for customers who meet any of the following requirements:
1. Their Social Security number has never been verified
2. They received an invalid response from the Social Security Administration the last time a verification was sent
3. They received no response from the Social Security Administration the last time a verification was sent
4. Their last verification was overridden due to a name change
If a customer’s Social Security number, name, or date of birth does not verify against Social Security On-Line Verification, the customer will receive a letter from the Registry of Motor Vehicles informing him/her that no permit/license/ID card transaction is possible until he/she resolves the problem with the Social Security Administration.
If Social Security On-Line Verification indicates that the Social Security number that the customer provided is not assigned to him/her, the Registry of Motor Vehicles will investigate and may refuse to issue a permit/license/ID card and may revoke any permit/license/ID card that has been issued.
If the customer's name matches current or prior information that the Registry of Motor Vehicles holds on file, the customer does not have to change his/her name with the Social Security Administration.
If the information the Social Security Administration has on file is incorrect, the customer must contact the Social Security Administration to resolve the problem.
