Road Test

To take a road test, a customer must be at least 16.5 years of age.

A junior operator under the age of 18 must complete the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) basic rider course to obtain a Class M (motorcycle) license or endorsement

A customer who successfully completes the MREP program does not need to take an RMV Class M road test.

A customer must take the road test prior to the expiration date displayed on his/her permit. If the customer does not pass a road test before the permit expires, he/she must obtain a new permit before taking the road test.

A customer must bring a completed Road Test Application form to the scheduled road test.

If the customer has completed the Massachusetts Rider Education Program, he/she does not have to take a Class M road test and the road test fees are waived.

If a customer has a medical condition or needs special equipment in order to drive, this will be factored into the customer’s road test. A competency test is not required for first license issuance. See the Competency Test policy for more information on competency tests.
