This section provides the Registry of Motor Vehicles’ current proof of identification policy.
A customer must be a Massachusetts resident and legally present in the U.S. for at least 12 months (from the date of application at the RMV) to be eligible for a Massachusetts permit/license/ID card. No proof of residence is required if the customer is trying to obtain a Liquor ID.
A customer is considered a first time applicant if he/she has never been issued a permit/license/ID card by the Registry of Motor Vehicles, or if the customer has any permit/license/ID card that expired more than four years ago. First time applicants are required to prove their identity.
All documents presented by the customer must be originals unless otherwise indicated. Photocopies will not be accepted.
A document is considered an acceptable form of identification if it can prove one or more of the following:
3. Date of birth
A document may not be used to prove more than one identification requirement. This means, for example, that the same document may not be used as proof of both Massachusetts residence and signature.
